If you’re looking for a straightforward way to share a one-click discount with your audience—without them needing to memorize or manually type in a coupon code—you’ve come to the right place. Here at Cannascale, we specialize in email marketing for hemp, CBD, and cannabis brands, and we’re always on the hunt for more effective and user-friendly ways to boost your conversions.

In this post, we’ll talk about how to create URLs that automatically apply Shopify discount codes and how to seamlessly include those special links in your Klaviyo campaigns.

Why auto-apply shopify discount codes?

Streamlined Shopping Experience

Nobody likes jumping through hoops for a discount. By sending your audience straight to checkout with the discount already applied, you’re removing an extra step and making it easier for people to buy. More convenience typically translates to higher sales.

Increased Conversions

Think about your own shopping habits. If a coupon magically appears in your cart, you’re probably more inclined to finalize that purchase. Same goes for your audience.

Ideal for Hemp, CBD & Cannabis Brands

In the cannabis space, trust is everything. Auto-applying discounts shows your customers you value their time and are willing to meet them where they’re at—no code entry required. It’s especially helpful if you promote discounts during certain 4/20-style promotions or hemp/cannabis-themed holidays.

Should I auto-apply or show the discount code?

We recommend doing both! By auto-applying the code when someone clicks your link, you remove extra steps and deliver a seamless shopping experience. However, you’ll also want to visually display the code in your email so that subscribers who don’t click through (or those who briefly glance at the email and head to your site directly) can still find and use it. In other words, covering both approaches ensures everyone has an easy way to redeem your discount—no matter how they interact with your email.

Step-by-Step: Creating the Auto-Applied Discount URL

Set Up Your Discount in Shopify

  1. Log into your Shopify admin, and head to the Discounts tab.
  2. Click Create Discount and choose your discount type (percentage, fixed amount, free shipping, etc.).
  3. Configure any special conditions (think minimum cart requirements or usage limits).
  4. Name your discount something memorable (like CBD10, HEMP20, or CANNABIS50).
  5. Build Your Discount URL

Shopify lets you auto-apply a discount when a customer lands on a specific URL. The structure looks like this:

https://yourstore.com/discount/DISCOUNT_CODE?redirect=/target-page

DISCOUNT_CODE = the exact code you set up in Shopify (capitalization matters).

/target-page = the page you want to send people to (like your homepage, a product page, or a special sale page).

Example:

https://yourstore.com/discount/CBD20?redirect=/collections/all

And if you want to send them to your homepage, you can just use:

https://yourstore.com/discount/CBD20?redirect=/

Test, Test, Test

Open the URL in an incognito or private browser to make sure the discount is applied automatically. You want to be certain your link is working perfectly before sending it to your customers.

Integrating the Discount URL in Your Klaviyo Emails

Create (or Edit) Your Email Campaign or Flow

Log in to Klaviyo and decide whether you’re sending this discount out via a one-time Campaign or within a Flow (like a welcome series or a back-in-stock alert).

Insert the Link

Highlight the text or button in your email where you want people to click, and then paste your shiny new URL in Klaviyo’s link field. Consider adding a catchy call to action like “Grab Your Discount” or “Save on CBD Now” to encourage those clicks.

Personalize Where Possible

Klaviyo is all about personalization. If you have subscriber data like first name, don’t be afraid to use it. Personal touches can really boost open and click-through rates. Something like:

“Hey {{ first_name }}, here’s your exclusive hemp discount—no code entry required!”

Quick Tips & Best Practices

Keep Your Discount Codes Short & Sweet

Simple codes like CBD10 or SAVE20 are more trustworthy and easier to remember—if someone does end up needing to type it in later.

Decide Where to Redirect

- Homepage: Great for new subscribers or general promotions.

- Product/Collection Page: Ideal if your discount is for a specific line of CBD gummies, tinctures, or topical products.

Optimize for Hemp & Cannabis Audiences

Hemp, CBD, and cannabis customers often appreciate clear, transparent marketing. Make sure your discount link and landing page mention any relevant product details or disclaimers so they can feel confident in their purchase.

A/B Test for Better Results

Don’t be shy about running A/B tests to see which discount codes, redirect pages, or email designs resonate best with your subscribers. Maybe CBD10 drives more sales than GETCBD, or a direct link to a product page outperforms your general homepage.

Comply with Local Regulations

This one’s important for the cannabis industry. Make sure your store’s shipping, age verification, and promotional materials align with any state or country regulations. Auto-applied discount URLs work wonders, but they won’t cover compliance on their own.
